The Marina Alta jewel: the muscatel grape

The Muscat of Alexandria grape is grown in many cities of the Marina Alta region, and is considered to be one of the best of its variety in the world. In addition to being vines that withstand the lack of irrigation very well, they are easy to grow and produce extraordinary fruit.

The Muscatel grape is a golden grape with large and very sweet berries, cultivated since time immemorial on sunny hills and under the influence of the Mediterranean Sea that affects to the humidity in the air. One of the cities with the best conditions to cultivate  this variety is the municipality of Teulada, a privileged place. You only have to take a stroll through the outskirts of the town to enjoy the marvellous views of the vineyards full of grapes patiently waiting for the grape harvest which takes place from the end of August to the beginning of September. Also if we walk around the town, we will be able to see in the warehouses where the grapes are harvested, a varied group of women arranging the bunches using a technique called “estirorar” which consists of removing the small or damaged berries and leaving only the healthy and large ones and preparing the boxes which are exported as table grapes to all parts of the country.

The Muscatel grape stands out for its aromatic power and the large amount of possibilities it has for making wines (white, sparkling or sweet  wines -mistela-) and it is also used to produce sultanas with an incredible sweetness.  We recommend a visit to the cooperative in Teulada where you will get the best advice on the many wines and mistelas locally produced.
