If in Spain you talk about Carnival, people tend to think about those of Cádiz or Santa Cruz de Tenerife. But if you do so in the Valencian Community, it is more likely that people talk about the Carnival of Pego, one of the most famous in the area.
The Carnival of Pego, which attracts lots of people from the surroundings, it is celebrated throughout different weekends.
The Saturday before Carnival the river Bullent gets full of handcraft boats thanks to a popular event known as “Descenso del Río Bullent”. This is a descent which has a peculiar requirement: the boats must be handcrafted and motorless, respecting thus the environment on their way through the Marsh of Pego-Oliva, which makes this “race” a real challenge.
The Carnival party takes place on the following Saturday. All the town gets full of costumes, music and celebration, with parades, open-air concerts and people from all over the region.
To round it off, the week after the Carnival Pego celebrates the “Pinyata” or “Entierro de la Sardina”, this is, the Carnival’s funeral. People parade dressed up all in black as a sign of mourning, carrying monuments in the name of the Carnival, which will be burnt later. The celebration ends with the “correfocs”, night shows with fireworks throughout the streets in town.
