What is the Cap d’Or Tower?
The Cap d’Or Tower is a watchtower that was built at the end of the 16th century as a fortification to defend the town from the attacks of the Berber pirates of the time. In addition to the Cap d’Or Tower, a series of watchtowers were built around the Mediterranean coast that communicated with each other to inform the towns of the interior of possible attacks and invasions of the territory. Today the Cap d’Or Tower and its access have been restored, same as the Cova de la Cendra, an Upper Palaeolithic archaeological site located on the south-eastern slope of Cap d’Or
How to get to the Cap d’Or Watchtower in Moraira?
The route to the Cap d’Or Tower starts from the Portet beach in Moraira, from where we will ascend through the urbanisations until we reach 490 metres on foot, then we will leave the streets to enter the Cap d’Or peninsula. From this point to the watchtower we will be only 800 metres on foot.
The path is dominated by rocks that can be slippery and uneven, making the first section of the route the most difficult. Then you will come across signs indicating the path to the Cova de la cendra (cave) and the watchtower. We will continue a gentle ascent until we reach the top of the Cap d’Or peninsula, where we will see the Cap d’Or watchtower appear before us.
All that remains is to enjoy the panoramic views that this point on the Mediterranean coast has to offer.
